How to Turn Instagram Followers Into Customers (Without Being Salesy)

February 17, 20243 min read

A key mistake I see creators making is their hesitancy to engage with their followers. (IMO you should take every opportunity to speak with your followers).

This not only allows you to understand your target audience and their problems, but also allows you to pitch your products and services directly to them.

Some common reasons that hold creators back from engaging and pitching to their followers include:

• Believing they don't have the "time" to engage with followers (when in reality, it's a lack of a system).

• Not wanting to sound "salesy", when in fact, they simply don't know how to sell. (Effective selling isn't sleazy).

• Unsure of what to say, resulting in the creator taking no action.

The Follower to Customer Strategy

Now that we understand why creators avoid engaging with their followers, let's discuss how to address this with the "Follower to Customer" strategy that I used to make over five figures in my Instagram DMs.

(Screenshots from 2 sales I received yesterday using this strategy)

1. Create Targeted Content Online

The first step to turning your followers into customers is creating targeted content online to attract your ideal customers.

For example, if you're a fitness coach who helps people lose weight, you need to create educational content on Instagram about losing weight.

Some examples of this content could be:

• The three best diets to lose weight in 2024

• Best bodyweight exercises to burn fat at home

• Debunking popular dieting myths

Creating this type of content will attract your ideal customers and you will start building an audience interested in losing weight.

2. Contact All New Followers

The next step is to contact every new follower you receive.

And this may feel spammy in the beginning, but it's important to remember that these people have engaged with your content and made a deliberate choice to follow you, showing their interest in seeing more of your content in the future.

To do this:

  1. Go to your notifications and change the filter to "Follows". This will show you the latest people who have followed you.

  1. Tap on their profile and send them this message:

"Hey (name), thanks so much for the follow! Are you looking to (whatever your content solves) or are you just enjoying the content?"

3. Qualify & Pitch

Finally, the last step is to qualify the follower and pitch them your product or service.

After sending the message above, if they reply saying they are following you to solve (the problem your content covers), you can then ask some qualifying questions to see if they are a good fit for your product or service.

Examples of qualifying questions for the "fitness coach" example could be:

• What have you tried in the past?

• How long have you been trying to lose weight?

• What's currently stopping you from achieving your weight loss goals?

After this qualifying process, if they're a good fit, book them for a free Zoom call where you can offer your solution.

TLDR;

If you skimmed through and just want the recap, here you go:

1. Share targets content online

2. Contact all new followers

3. Qualify the lead

4. Pitch (if qualified)
